Global Issues
Because of Metro’s work with hurting children around the world, we see first hand many of the global issues that plague our world and often, it is the children who suffer most and who feel these issues most deeply. |

PovertyPoverty is a way of life for much of the world’s population. In many communities, we find that children are growing up in substandard conditions and are unable to attend school because their parents cannot afford to send them.
Metro’s Won-By-One program seeks to help these children and their families. A child is connected with a sponsor, who is then able to assist that child and his family with basic necessities or even simple gifts perhaps for a birthday or Christmas for which a poor child might otherwise receive nothing at all.

Hunger Hunger is a threat facing children all over the world. To combat this threat, Metro conducts annual food drives in the US. Overseas, it even operates a Mobile Bakery in locations such as Romania. The Mobile Bakery is a truck with a bakery built inside. Able to produce 200 loaves an hour, it enables us to reach remote villages where food is scarce. Each loaf is made from a special mixture of ingredients that meets a child’s complete nutritional needs for a day according to USDA standards. We have used our mobile bakeries in Romania, Ukraine, Bulgaria, and soon, South Africa.

Response to 9-11 TrajedyBecause our headquarters is in Brooklyn, NY, we were in a unique position to respond on 9-11. Metro Ministries provided volunteer staff who assisted the Salvation Army as it provided services to the rescue personnel at Ground Zero and at the landfill where debris was examined. |

AIDS Awareness Metro’s newest operation in South Africa in the province of KwaZulu-Natal which began in Spring 2005. The situation in South Africa is critical. It leads the world in the number of people living with HIV/AIDS, 5,300,000, and the number of kids orphaned because of it, projected to be 3,000,000 by 2006. Metro will seek to bring AIDS awareness to the children and their communities to help confront and hopefully slow the tide of this terrible epidemic.
